Our use of water now can affect future generations of Americans, because if we use too much, they might not have enough water. Our food also depends on water because crops and livestock both need water. Also, processing a lot of water has bad effects. High water pressure and high levels of water can cause long-term damage to filtration systems. Processing water also requires a lot of energy; 13 percent of the electricity used annually in the United States is used for the transportation and treatment of water.
